WHERE SHE COMES FROM

Betty Sutton’s record proves she is a consistent champion of fairness and justice for all. The youngest of six children, Betty was born and raised in Barberton. Her mother was clerk-treasurer at the city library and her father worked at the local boiler factory. They valued education and taught her strong principles to live by. Ever since Betty has dedicated herself to excellent public service and the rule of law.

Betty attended public schools and worked her way through Kent State University. She then enrolled at the University of Akron School of Law, where she earned a Dean’s Club Scholarship, the American Jurisprudence Award and Federal Bar Association Award for outstanding performance in Constitutional Law. Sadly, during her first year of law school, Betty’s beloved dad fell ill with lung cancer. True to her family values, Betty found a way to spend precious time with her dad and also complete her courses.  She graduated in 1990 and won election to Barberton City Council while still a student.

A THRIVING CAREER

A tireless advocate for families and communities, Sutton served on Summit County Council, and then won election to the Ohio House of Representatives and the United States Congress. There she learned to write the law, and to oversee the courts on the Judiciary Committees in both the Ohio House and Congress. Next, President Obama appointed Betty to be Administrator of the The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, where she dealt with many complex legal issues in order to keep the Seaway open and American families working.

As an attorney for thirty years, Betty Sutton has had the honor of representing Fire Fighters, Nurses, Emergency Medics, Police, Teachers, Building and Construction Workers, School Staff, Public Service Employees, and many other Ohioans who were not always treated fairly. She knows how much their hard work matters to us all, and brings her passion and determination for justice to everything she does.

 

As Judge on the Ninth District Court of Appeals, Betty Sutton has decided more than a thousand cases and been the author judge of more than three hundred opinions.  No matter where she has served us, Betty Sutton has never forgotten her roots.  She understands that the decisions of our courts have profound real-life impacts on people and our communities.  Judge Sutton knows that fairness matters. Justice belongs to everybody. She has the experience and integrity to make sure we will get it.
