Former Congresswoman Betty Sutton seeks judicial seat in Ninth District Court of Appeals

“Former Congresswoman Betty Sutton will challenge for a seat on Ohio’s Ninth District Court of Appeals.

Sutton, 56, represented portions of Lorain County in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007-2013. Now residing in Copley Township, Sutton will challenge Judge Julie A. Schaefer, who is seeking a second term, according to the Summit County Board of Elections.


The Ninth District Court of Appeals is based in Akron and hears cases from Lorain, Medina, Summit and Wayne counties.


Sutton has a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University and a law degree from the University of Akron School of Law. Her political career began in 1990 when she was elected to an at-large seat on Barberton City Council.


In 1991, Sutton was appointed to fill an at-large seat on the Summit County Council, where she served until 1992. During her second year in office, Sutton was elected vice president of the Council. Before being elected to Congress in 2006, Sutton served eight years in the Ohio House of Representatives, where she was the youngest woman ever elected at age 29.

She served for eight years and could not run again due to term limits.
